A Beginner’s Guide to Disc Golf All-Year Round!

Are you new to disc golf? Here’s how to start.

A variant of golf with special frisbee-type discs, disc golf is prided by many for being an accessible, affordable, and social game. Instead of hitting a ball down the green, players toss their discs and use the above-ground basket as their target. It has the same concept as golf: you are trying to get your disc into the basket in as few shots as possible, and a low score is the name of the game.

Disc golf is a great way to get outside while challenging yourself to a new sport. Like in normal golf, the average course has 18 holes. We call the potential to breathe in a whole whack of fresh air in the Saskatchewan sunshine a win!

Where to play disc golf around Saskatoon

Saskatoon boasts many courses for you to take on your new hobby. The Diefenbaker Disc Golf Course is a perfect choice if you’d like some views to go along with your game. Located right along the river, the south-enders are spoiled with this spot. North of the river, William A. Reid Disc Golf Course sits in an open park and is awesome for beginners and intermediate players. Best part? Both locations are located within the city and are free to use!

If you’d like to get out of town for a round. Both Pike Lake and Crickle Creek have disc golf courses as well! Get out for fresh air while engaging in a competitive hobby; you can’t go wrong as far as we’re concerned. Crickle Creek is $10 a round or $120 for a season membership. The Pike Lake course is free but will require you to pay an entry fee at the gate if the provincial park is open for its season.

A great perk about Pike Lake and many other Provincial Park disc golf courses (as well as some small-town courses) is that they offer free disc rentals if you’d like to try them before buying your own equipment. This is a great way to test the sport or take newbie pals!

What you need to get started with disc golf

Simplicity & space saving…this sport has you covered. Disc golf requires minimal equipment. We offer a large range of options for you to build your set. You can piece together individual discs or find one of our starter sets.

Ready to get started? You’ll need a basic set; it includes three discs, a fairway driver disc, a midrange disc, and a putter disc. If you are hooked, don’t look too far because we have the best selection of discs and carrying bags in Saskatoon!

Playing outside in the winter? We have you covered with gear.

Winter play can be an enjoyable way to get out in the snow, but it requires a bit of extra gear to stay toasty. We recommend you start with:

Why not get your pals and hot chocolates and hit the course?

All city disc golf courses are hosted in public parks but receive no maintenance from the city. So winter play is possible at Diefenbaker, William A. Reid and Donna Birkmaier; however, you’ll have to stomp out your way. According to our friends at Saskatoon Disc Golf, some dedicated winter golfers go out & clear tee boxes- so you won’t be alone if you decide to take on some winter disc!

Saskatoon Disc Golf Official is also pleased to offer pop-up courses occasionally throughout the winter, typically featuring shorter courses with unique layouts and shot lines that players don’t usually experience. You can watch for these pop-ups on their Facebook page, Saskatoon DG Official, Instagram, or their group.

We love year-round play; that’s why we love disc golf!

The best part about disc golf is that it’s a great sport to play all year round. It’s a sport you can do on vacation, at home with a team or club, or on your own. Whether it’s exercise or socialising you’re after, there are good times to be had. Head out for a round this fall, and let us know your favourite spot!
